  1. Research & Grant Writing: J.S. Bach Specialist in Historically Informed Performance Practices for Cello

  • Bach Solo Cello Suites Project: The project focused on The Six Suites for Solo Violoncello, BWV 1007-1012.  2017 to 2023 marks the 300th anniversary of these remarkable works, which are considered a tour de force for cellists to perform. Cellists treat these works as a milestone of artistic and technical achievement. However, there are many aspects of performing the suites that raise questions about 18th century performance practice, how to achieve an historically informed performance on a modern cello, and questions about what is, or is not, “authentic” for these suites since there is not a copy of the original in Bach’s own hand. The Lectures that accompanied each recital explored many of these questions and attempted to address some aspects about implied counterpoint for a single line instrument, motivic development, harmonic structure, ornamentation, and form of the suites.

B. Research & Grant Writing: Additional Research

PSC-CUNY Award (Traditional B) in application for Recording of Cello Music by Underrepresented Latin-American Composers.

  • Cello Literature and Chamber Music by Latin-American Composers. Sponsored by Bend the Knotted Oak, this is an ongoing survey of cello and chamber literature by Latin-American composers. The Violoncello Society, Inc has also requested a presentation and discussion (tentatively scheduled for Fall 2023) of this repertoire in collaboration with concertizing cellist John-Henry Crawford. This valuable information will be made available through the VCS website: www.violoncellosocietynyc.com  Recently, there has been a surge of interest in cello music from Latin-American composers past and present, in part due to the release of the SOLA catalog (Strings of Latin-America). This catalog is in its initial phases and needs further research in providing details of publication and manuscript locations. I have presented select works on two recitals to date including works by Alberto Ginastera, Hector Villa-Lobos, Manuel Ponce, Arturo Marquez, Joaquín Nin, José Bragato, and Luis Saglie. Recordings of these recitals are available for free streaming at www.robertreedcello.com.  Recital Dates: 19 & 20 March 2022; 30 & 31 October 2021.

  • PSC-CUNY Research Foundation Award: Additional funding is being sought from PSC-CUNY Research Foundation to professionally record and distribute cello works by underrepresented composers from Latin-America.

  • Cello Literature and Chamber Music by African-American Composers. Sponsored by Bend the Knotted Oak, this is an ongoing survey of cello and literature by African-American composers and African Diaspora composers. Select works from this repertoire will be chosen for presentation on a recital 5 February 2023. The findings and recordings will be published and made available on my website: www.robertreedcello.com. Dr. Timothy Holly of North Carolina Central University has pioneered much of the research into this repertoire. It is my desire to help him disseminate this rich body of work through research and performance. Composers whose works are being investigated include Florence Price, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, George Walker, Evan Williams, H. Leslie Adams, Adolphus Hailstork, David Baker, William Grant Still, etc. Publication of the recitals will appear on www.robertreedcello.com
